If there is one physical issue that bothers more than half the population in the world, then it is the issue of weight loss. Some are lucky to have found the key while there are many who strive all their life. Of course, one needs to be active all the time to prevent weight gain but if you wish to lose weight in a systematic manner and without stressing too much, then your best solution is yoga.
The three-pronged approach of yoga in weight loss
Weight gain or loss is just related to the physical aspect whereas the emotional state is also as responsible. It is a proven fact that people binge and overeat when they are stressed. It can also be the other way. Too much mental strain will spoil appetite for many. In both cases, the result is an unhealthy body. Yoga is not just about physical state or the asanas (poses) but it also takes into account the mind and the spirit. With this three-pronged approach, yoga helps in relaxation of body and mind. It also is helpful in detoxification. This means the toxins are removed effectively which leads to better functioning of the digestive and circulatory system. Good digestion prevents accumulation of fats and thereby prevents weight gain.
Yoga poses are such that they engage each and every muscle in the body, from head to toe. This is another factor that aids weight loss. When each and every cell feels worked out and rejuvenated, the body is able to sustain what it needs and throw out what it does not. At the same time, it is also essential that you consume a healthy, nutritious diet that is low in calories. Avoid junk and processed food as much as you can.
Few yoga poses that can contribute to weight loss
If you look at it, almost any yoga pose or asana can help you cut down the extra pounds provided you practise them regularly and in the correct manner. Yoga should be learnt from a certified trainer or master because each and every move is accompanied by breathing exercises. Yet, there are some simple and basic poses you can try which can greatly help in losing weight.
A helpful asana is the boat pose which is balancing your body on your tailbone and the sitting bone. It also strengthens your abs and hips. Sit on the ground in such a way that the legs are stretched side by side. Let the fingers rest behind your hip but the fingers should be pointing to the feet. Keep your back straight and now lift your hands slowly forward. Breathe out and bend your knees. Then slowly lift the feet in such a way that your thighs are positioned a little up in around 45 degrees. Try to straighten your knee and remain in the position for 10 seconds.
Warrior pose is also beneficial for weight loss. You stand straight with legs apart. Raise your arms and keep them parallel to the ground. Now move them towards the sides. Now take your right foot to the right while the left foot remains at 90 degrees. Bend the right knee. Keep your back straight.
Upward facing dog pose is another pose you can try. It helps to work both your abdominal muscles and your back muscles. It will also aid in cutting down stored fats in the abdominal area. Lie on your stomach and place your hands on the sides. Bend the elbows and place the palms on the sides of waist. Press your hands in such a way that you are pushing forward onto the ground. Now while straightening the arms, life your abdomen and the legs a little while breathing in. Look ahead while holding your head high.
Losing weight with yoga is far more effective than any other workout because along with working your body, yoga also has positive effects on your mind. By helping you to relax, meditate and breathe correctly, it works on your entire physical and mental system. You become more calm and relaxed and you can think and act clearly. You will appreciate healthy eating and you will also be able to lead a more disciplined life. All these can contribute to losing weight slowly but effectively.
